SAIL RATINGS of BACON & ASSOCIATES, INC.

NEW-UNUSED: Our top rating. This is a sail that has never been aboard a boat. Such a sail is a good buy at about 25% off the original price. We usually get sails of this quality when an order is cancelled, when the sail was made to incorrect specifications, or if the boat meets with an accident.
NEW-USED: Our second rating. This sail has been used a very few times at most. Some may be unused but have minor stains. In any case, the sail life is not affected: life is as new.
EXCELLENT: This sail has seen some use, raced part of a season, or light use for more than one season. Sail has most of its life remaining. This could be a new sail with minor shipment damage, or stains.
VERY GOOD: Sail with about 2/3rds of its life remaining. Sometimes a better sail with poor appearance.
GOOD: Sail with about 1/2 of its life remaining, or a better sail with poor appearance.
FAIR: Sail is still usable, usually showing some wear and stains.
POOR: Very few sails of this rating are listed. Sail probably needs some repairs (do it yourself.) Do not expect much.

We strongly recommend against the alteration of sails under 45’ luff. Recutting often cancels the economy of buying second-hand sails and can even destroy a sail, unless handled correctly. If in doubt, check with your sailmaker on the cost of recutting.
